Local Exhaust Ventilation System Management
Course Overview
Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) systems are essential engineering controls used to capture and remove airborne contaminants at their source — including dust, mist, fumes, vapours and gases — before they disperse into workplace air. A well-designed and properly maintained LEV system is critical for protecting workers’ respiratory health and ensuring compliance with workplace safety standards.
This course equips professionals with both the theoretical understanding and practical skills required to assess, design, test and manage LEV systems in accordance with recognized best practices and industry standards such as SS 658:2020 (Code of Practice for Local Exhaust Ventilation systems).
Course Learning Outcome
- Explain ventilation principles and LEV system components
- Including airflow behaviour, contaminant capture mechanisms and system elements (hoods, ducts, fans and discharge stacks).
- Evaluate LEV designs using engineering calculations
- Assess airflow rates, pressure losses, duct resistance, fan performance and hood capture effectiveness.
- Interpret relevant standards and regulatory requirements
- Apply SS 658:2020 and Workplace Safety and Health regulatory frameworks to real-world LEV systems.
- Conduct performance assessments and identify deficiencies
- Use systematic methods to verify that LEV systems achieve intended contaminant control.
- Develop practical maintenance and monitoring strategies
- Ensure ongoing system effectiveness through inspection, testing and documentation.
Learning Units
- Principles of Ventilation and Airflow
- Principles of LEV Design and Fabrication
- Engineering Calculations for LEV Performance
- Assessment, Testing, and Management Practices
